Frequently asked questions about Scalp Micropigmentation

What is Scalp Micropigmentation?

Scalp micropigmentation is the process of depositing pigment (ink) into the scalp using a tiny needle. This creates the illusion of tiny hair follicles or short hair stubble. SMP can restore your receding hairline. SMP can add density to thinning hair. SMP even works on baldness.

Is Scalp Micropigmentation permanent?

SMP is a form of permanent cosmetic tattooing. The treatment can last up to 6 years. As it fades, touch- ups will be required.

Does SMP work with gray hair? What if my hair turns gray after having the procedure?

For clients with gray hair it is recommended to cut their hair to a short buzzed length. This way the left over root will appear darker and can be blended in with the pigment that is used which is on a gray-scale. The pigment will fade over the years so if the hair is turning gray, it will blend well. The colour can always be adjusted during touch-ups.

How long does an SMP session take?

Sessions typically last 2-4 hours depending on the degree of hair loss.

How many treatments are required?

Scalp micropigmentation requires multiple sessions. Clients generally require 3-4 sessions to complete the process. The treatments are usually spaced about 14 - 20 days apart.

Does Scalp Micropigmentation work for long hair?

Yes. SMP can be used to add density to thinning hair. Pigment can be added to common areas like the crown, hair part etc. It is a great solution for female balding patterns.

How long do results last?

One can expect the colour to last for 4-6 years. If the client starts to notice fading of the pigment they can undergo a brief touch up session to restore the colour.

Does the SMP procedure hurt?

For most clients, the pain is minimal. It is less painful than a traditional tattoo.

How do I choose a hair line? (For balding men)

The technician will help determine the type of hairline that works best depending on the client's preference, head shape and age. Over the course of the sessions, the hairline can be adjusted for a perfect result.

Will the dots change colour or turn blue?

The pigment will fade over time to a lighter shade on a gray scale. The pigment used for SMP will not turn blue.

Beyond black, are there other pigment options used in scalp micropigmentation to better match hair colour?

Yes, SMP pigment has come a long way in the area of coloured pigments. The artist will determine the best colour required for perfect blending based on your current hair colour and skin tone.

How does Scalp Micropigmentation Measure-Up to other hair loss treatments?

Key Points to Consider:

  • Natural appearance: While some solutions like hair transplants can achieve a natural look, others like wigs or hair fibers might not.

  • Timeline: SMP offers the advantage of immediate results, while other options require significant waiting periods.

  • Cost: SMP is a relatively affordable solution compared to hair transplants, which can be very expensive.

  • Suitability: Not all solutions work for everyone, and some may have limitations depending on individual factors.

  • Side effects: It's important to consider the potential side effects of each option. Rogaine and Propecia can interact with medications and can cause health issues. Hair fibers are messy and wigs can be uncomfortable. Hair transplants are very invasive. SMP is non-invasive and low maintenance with minimal risk.

**Please note: This is just a general comparison, and individual results may vary. It is always advisable to consult with a qualified healthcare professional for personalized advice on hair loss solutions.
